As a global leader, Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group understands the importance of designing and operating sustainable hotels as well as offering sustainable solutions for our guests and corporate clients. Below are best practice examples from three of our Radisson Blu hotels.
Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel Stockholm was the first building in Sweden to achieve LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification recognizing “best-in-class” building strategies in new construction. Part of this achievement is due to 100 percent of materials from the previous building being used to reconstruct the hotel as it is today. A huge double glass wall acts as an energy collector that generates on average 1MW of heat energy each day—teamed with LED and long-life lighting, this significantly reduces the carbon footprint of the venue. The hotel also uses water from the adjacent lake to cool the building.
Brain Food, a signature piece of the Radisson Blu Experience Meetings program, is served at meetings and events. Menus are designed from locally grown and seasonal products focusing on fair and sustainably sourced produce. A key part of their food sustainability strategy is prioritizing quality over quantity, ensuring guests receive the best-quality produce while reducing food waste.
Like the Stockholm Waterfront, the Radisson Blu Aqua Hotel, Chicago is LEED (Silver) certified and is the only full-service hotel in Chicago to have achieved the commercial interior level of this certification. Additional achievements include a Green Key Global 4-key rating and TripAdvisor GreenLeaders Platinum rating. Many ecological features have been integrated in the building’s iconic design created by internationally acclaimed and environmentally conscious architect, Jeanne Gang of Gang Architects. During the build, Radisson Blu Aqua ensured that more than 92 percent of all construction waste was recycled and 17 percent of materials were sourced locally. In addition, the hotel implements practical and measurable strategies that have resulted in a 21 percent reduction in annual water consumption, installation of equipment using 25 percent less energy, a 31 percent reduction in lighting energy consumption through the use of LEDs and the generation of 50 percent of its energy supply from renewable sources.
The hotel encourages guests to make sustainable choices by providing discount cards for bike sharing services, discounted parking for carpools and electrical car charging posts. Guests can also benefit from the hotel’s 80,000-square-foot green roof with native plants.
Radisson Blu Aqua minimizes plastic bottle waste by serving in-house filtered water, eliminating transport miles for bottled water and serves meeting delegates Brain Food, which includes a maximum of organic, local and vegetarian options that are good for the planet as well as for increased concentration levels of meeting participants.
Radisson Blu Nagpur is located at the most central point of India and is the only LEED (Gold) Certified building in Nagpur. The hotel developed a sustainability strategy that not only encompasses the site selection and design of the building, but includes many additional initiatives, which helped the hotel achieve the EarthCheck eco-label as well.
The hotel is a leader when it comes to renewable energy by utilizing 100 percent of its energy from wind power. The Radisson Blu Nagpur still recognizes the need to reduce energy demand, installing energy saving technology such as LED lights that save an average of 54,662 kWH per year. The hotel has also installed light dimmers, motion sensors and occupancy sensors on guest floors to ensure energy is not being wasted.
In addition to using wind power, the hotel boasts solar panels to heat their water supply and is mindful of optimizing the usage of water resources when developing and maintaining the property’s green space, which includes a tree plantation project.
